An excellent Nicoya Jaguar urn from Costa Rica, ca. 1000 - 1500 AD. This gorgeous Pataki Polychrome zoomorphic effigy vessel is 11-1/2 in high and depicts a standing jaguar, with large fangs in the open mouth and the tail forming the third leg of the tripod. The upper portion of the pear-shaped chamber is decorated with bands composed of various elements of the characteristic man-jaguar theme, including a stylized jaguar with claws, feathered headdress, spears, etc. The legs, arms, tail and bib surrounding the head are decorated with stylized jaguar heads.
