VINTAGE BONE & WOOD MAHJONG SET IN LACQUER CASE: A vintage, c. 1910, Chinese mahjong set with lacquered case decorated with figurative scenes in silver. The case having two heavy metal handles on the lid and a sliding face which reveals 5 drawers with turned bone pulls which have gold-flecked orange lacquer interior linings. The set includes a Pung-Show instruction page and 148 tile pieces made of scrimshawed and painted bone which are dovetail joined to wood backs, also including a large quantity of scoring / betting sticks, wood dice and bone playing pieces, manufacturer's mark on inside of sliding door, box measures 9.5"h x 7"l x 7"w. The game is also known as: Majong, Mah Jong, Mah Jongg, Mahjong, Ma Cheung, Pung-Chow, the Game of Sparrows, and the Game of One Thousand Intelligences.

PROVENANCE: From the mass international collection of the living estate of a former Executive for Levi Strauss International, who traveled the world for the firm buying and shipping denim before retirement and as a Broker of Real Estate in San Francisco, Maine and Florida. He received a B.A. from the University of Omaha, and remains a lead Donor of their Alumni Association today; he earned his Master's Degree at Ohio State where he served on the Dean's Staff. He was a Vice-President, 3-term President and served on the Board of Directors for the Lee Memorial Auxiliary. He was a Director on the Board for the Fort Myers Community Concert Association and Sponsor of Southwest Florida Symphony. He is also the Benefactor of Healthcare Educational and Endowment Grants - with a specific generosity for patients of HIV/AIDS, healthcare workers, & of volunteers for the sick and under-privileged.
