United States, Seattle, Washington, Odd Fellows Lodge, ca. early to mid 20th century. Four masks created for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization that promotes charity and reciprocity fostered by Judeo-Christian ethics. Made from fine screen material, two of a black hue and two of a blush red hue, all trimmed with metal bands, the masks depict human visages with contoured facial planes and modeled noses, lips, and eyes, hand painted eyes and lips, two with painted brows as well. All have added fibers to delineate facial hair. Quite an expressive group made via an unusual technique for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal order founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, MD that is known as the Triple Link Fraternity, a title that references the order's "Triple Links" symbol, stemming from its motto "Friendship, Love and Truth." Size: largest mask measures 7" W x 10.5" H (17.8 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Morgan Collection, Santa Monica, CA.
