Item: Silver Viking Heart PendantDate: 900-1050 A.D.Material: Silver overlaySize: 7/8 inch
As with most cultures, the heart had special meaning for Vikings. It was a male symbol for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the warrior. Warriors wore hearts as brooches, pendants and pectorals often in significant multiples. It is said that Hrungnir, with whom Thor dueled (assisted by a sorceress), had a heart of stone. This example depicts the heart surrounded by two roped borders. Surface only slightly worn in antiquity with good detail.
