ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES CRAIG (CO/OH, 1846-1931) - Portrait of a Southern Ute Native American Chief, probably southwestern Colorado, full-length, in battle regalia, oil on canvas, unsigned, circa 1890s, in red walnut cove frame with gilt liner, OS: 21" x 15", SS: 15 1/2" x 9 1/2". Cleaned and relined, retouched at bottom. The first artist to paint Taos, New Mexico, Craig had his permanent studio in Howbert's Opera House in Colorado Springs. One of his trips to Ute lands, in 1893, was with his friend, painter Frank Sauerwein. This may be from that trip.
