SCARCE EARLY TYPEWRITER - The "Blickensderfer 5", the first widely successful production model portable typewriter, in the original oak case with paper labels, introduced at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Production and public sales began 1895-96. One of the first truly portable typewriters with a full keyboard; this example has the QWERTY keyboard, which was only available on request. Uniquely, this has an interchangeable type cylinder with a then unusual striking method, not seen again until the IBM Selectrix nearly 70 years later.6 3/4" x 12 3/4" x 9 1/4" case. Good condition, some wear to paint, missing the 'P' key, wire paper rack, and one rubber foot.
