A type characteristic of the pirates of the Barbary Coast, which closely follows a Dutch or Danish prototype. The stock of curly walnut with carved panels, the massive and unusual flintlock mechanism retaining the earlier lug-type stop. The well-forged steel barrel expanding at the belled muzzle, retained to the stock with three elaborately-engraved brass barrel bands, the buttplate, counterplate and triggerguard likewise of brass, with an inlaid escutcheon and ebony ramrod. Mid-18th century. Worn. The Barbary Coast was well known for piracy from the 16th-19th century, blunderbusses saw considerable use there. Overall length 106.5cm. Condition III
