Mughal work, the entire hilt and scabbard of elephant, the pommel carved as a fully-modelled lion’s head with mane, ears and teeth well-delineated; the eyes gilded and the tongue retaining much original red stain. The grip tapering to the faceted integral bolster, the kard-type blade wrought of elegantly-patterned wootz steel. The scabbard finely engraved with vine motifs. Mid-18th century. Very light wear. Overall length 27.3 cm. Condition II
