A presentation saber displaying the highest level of Kubachi workmanship in steel and gold, the distinctive pommel wrought as a fully-modelled eagle’s head with red cloth tongue intact, the guard gracefully recurved, the three scabbard mounts with elegant ogival terminals, all replete with characteristically intricate Kubachi zarneshan, or true-inlaid goldwork. The pommel further set with garnet eyes, the scabbard with three large, pale carnelians. The elephant grips influenced by those of the Caucasian shashka. The long, deeply curved blade bifullered, with additional fuller to the spine, and pronounced yelman or back edge. Etched at the forte on either side with H II for Tsar Nikolai II (r. 1894-1917) amongst curlicues and laurel leaves. Latter 19th century. Areas of scuffing to leather. Overall length 100cm. Condition I
