The steel basket hilt wrought of characteristic complex profiled strips, curled quillon and integral thumbring. The fine “cat’s head” form pommel of bronze intricately engraved, with leather-covered corded wooden grip. The exceptionally long, single-edged earlier heirloom blade with backedge and triple fullers, and struck with Genovese “sickle” maker’s marks. Elaborately etched with Qur’anic inscriptions within cartouches. First half of the 17th century. Light wear. Among the Baltic peoples who served Venice as Schiavoni, or Slavic-speaking soldiers, were the Bosnians, a group which had been conquered by the Ottomans in 1463 and subsequently converted to Islam.
