China, Ming Dynasty, 1368 to 1644 CE. This is a pretty architectural brick, originally used in the wall of a temple. It has a design of three horses, standing in front of multiple rings. This green enamel style is a response - or was at least partly influenced - by lively trade during this period with the Islamic world; the horse motif also speaks to a West Asian theme and the nomadic and martial history of China. Comes with custom stand. Size: 8.25" W x 3.3" H (21 cm x 8.4 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Private Orange County, CA collection
