Pre-Columbian, gulf coast of Mexico, Veracruz, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A small pottery head created by the artisans of Veracruz, with huge spooled earrings and a small nose ornament. Black chapapote/bitumen marks out the lips; this glossy black petroleum-based paint is a hallmark of Veracruz sculpture. Size: 4.8" W x 3.65" H (12.2 cm x 9.3 cm)
