George Frederick Castleden (1861-1945), "La Espada Mission, San Antonio", 1925, watercolor, sight: 10.5 x 13.5 in., frame: 17 x 20 in.

Coming from England to Canada in 1888, George Castleden later migrated to the United States where he traveled as a scenic painter. In 1911, he visited New Orleans and returned several years later, staying until 1936 when he moved to Charleston, South Carolina. The monuments of Texas must have captured the artist's imagination when he painted this image of one of San Antonio's famous missions.
