ATTRIBUTED TO P.D. HONDT, FLEMISH OILS ON CANVAS, 18TH C., PAIR, H 91", W 67", "RACHEL AT THE WELL" & "JOSEPH SOLD INTO SLAVERY": "Rachel at the Well" signed "P.D. Hondt" in the near lower right (see photo detail). Both paintings are attributed to Phillipe de Hondt (Flemish, 1683-1741). Large format. In gilt wood frames. From the Estate of Daniel Clancy, Voltaire Place, Grosse Pointe Farms; sold by Christie's New York, Friday, January 31, 1997, lot #54 (see Christie's labels lot 54, 8584 2 KB172 listing them as a pair (see photo details), both were listed as attributed to P.D. Hondt by Christie's in the before mentioned sale.

Very good quality. As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: both are lined; both had their canvases previously folded [probably to make them fit into smaller fames]; both in 20th c. frames; one having c. 8% overpainting in the bottom third and UL and overall fine craquelure with instability; the 'white' along the edges fluoresces; one having a white spot in the sky in the UR; other one has c. 10% overpainting in the bottom quarter of the painting with the overpainting in the cracks having turned white, has unstable craquelure, paint is slightly skinned, 2 white spots on the right and has a patch in the LL. The signature in "Rachel at the Well" does not fluoresce under UV light.
