Tiffany & Company was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in Brooklyn, Connecticut in 1837. The company was initially labeled as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium." When the company built a $500,000 store at 15 Union Square West, Manhattan, designed by John Kellum, it was described by The New York Times as a, "palace of jewels." The courageous step of buying the French Crown Jewels is what drew major publicity and further solidified the Tiffany brand's association with high-quality diamonds and jewels. A now world-class company, Tiffany & Co. won its first gold medal for jewelry and a grand prize for silverware at the Paris Exposition in 1878. Unburdened by the recession from 1990-1991, Tiffany placed an emphasis upon mass merchandising by advertising, "How to Buy a Diamond" brochures to more than 40,000 people. Today, Tiffany & Co. is considered one of the most prestigious jewelers whose unique pieces have been worn by famous families such as the Astors, Vanderbilts, Posts, Huttons, and Morgans.
