Item: Evergreen Review: Volume 5, Number 21Editor: Barney RossetDate: November-December 1961Publisher: Evergreen Review, Inc, New YorkFirst EditionSmall 8vo., 126, pages
A special issue on "The German Scene," appearing just a few months after the construction of the Berlin Wall. It includes "The Wide Skirt," by Günter Grass, as well as poems and short stories by other German authors. Especially interesting is Marianne Kesting's look at Bertolt Brecht and the Berliner Ensemble and Uwe Johnson's essay about the current literary scene in Berlin. Johnson wrote authoritatively on the subject, as he had left East Germany in 1959 to settle in West Berlin, just before his novel "Speculations About Jakob" was due to be published in West Germany. An excerpt from the novel appears in this issue of Evergreen Review. Very Good in lightly rubbed pictorial wrappers, with minor creasing to a couple of pages and foxing to the top edge. SCARCE
