Description: 6 volumes. Edited by Brian Walton. Each volume with copper-engraved frontispiece portrait engraved by Lombaret, and added engraved title engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar; Vol. I with 6 plates & maps, most double page, engraved by Hollar. Rules in red throughout separate the various languages. (folio) 17x11¼, period calf over boards, rebacked with modern calf, raised bands, morocco labels, new endpapers.Walton's massive polyglot Bible, with text variously in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, Persian, Arabic, Ethiopian, etc. The present copy is highly unusual in that both states of the preface are included (one to King Charles one to Cromwell)- one of them was cancelled, so the presence of both is rare. Besides the important compilations of various versions of the Bible, and the extensive commentary, the work is notable for the fine plates engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar, including a map of the Holy Land, map/bird's-eye view of Jerusalem, a double-page architectural engraving of the Temple, etc. Ink ownership signature of Thomas Wentworth, dated 1713, to top of engraved title-pages.
