Description

S-021 Lot of two German WWII military leaders: (1) Luftwaffe General Fieldmarshal Albert Kesserling. Ink signed 2 1/4" x 3 1/2" note card "Kesserling-Generalfeld marshall - Nbg. 1947". His military career spanned both wars. One of Germany's most skilled Commanders he was one of only twenty-seven recipients of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves with Swords and Diamonds. Because of massacres committed by troops under his command in Italy, Kesserling was tried for war crimes and sentenced to death. The sentence was subsequently commuted to life imprisonment, and because of health issues he was released in 1952. (2) Hans Speidel. 1963 ink signed Christmas card. (Speidel served as Rommel's Chief of Staff and was imprisoned following the 1944 Hitler Bomb Plot. In 1951 he became a military advisor to the West German government and held commanding in NATO).
