This is a wonderful older wooden dance mask from the Yaka peoples of The DRC / Congo, central Africa.Carved wood with a well handled and weathered patina. An unusual example that appears to have field use. The mask itself measures 24 x 13 inches. The Display stand will be included.Previously in the Steve Tobin collection, noted Modern artist from Pennsylvania.Several types of masks are used in dances celebrating the emergence of young initiates from the Yaka circumcision camp, where boys are ritually received into Yaka manhood. Initiates hold n-khanda masks like this one to celebrate their new status as men
