    John James Audubon (1785-1851) was an American ornothologist, painter, and naturalist. With his extensive illustrations documening American birds, he was the dominant wildlife artist during his lifetime. He became famous for his book, Birds in America, which contained 435 life-size prints. His last publication shifted focus from birds to mammals titled, Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America.
