    Austin Flint (1812-1886) was one of 19th century America’s most prominent physicians and prolific writers. He would continue the family tradition of medical practice that dated back to his grandfather, Edward Flint, who served as a medical officer in the Revolutionary War. After studying at Amherst College, Austin Flint entered the Harvard Medical School in 1830. There, he studied under Jacob Bigelow, John C. Warren, and James Jackson, who were all strongly influenced by the French school of medicine with its emphasis on the newer techniques of physical diagnosis and clinicopathologic correlation.
