Description

A rare Imperial German WWI Merit Award medal, the Pour le Merite, or informally Blauer Max (Blue Max), awarded by the King of Prussia as recognition of extraordinary personal achievement. The medal measures 1-9/16 inches by 1-5/8 inches, and includes the top suspension loop and black and white neck ribbon. The from reads "Pour Le Merite" across the three lower arms of the cross. The upper arm of the cross has a Crown above the letter "F" representing King Frederick II of Prussian who established the award in 1740. The top edge of the upper arm above the crown bears the maker's mark "JGUS" of Joseph Godet Und Sohn." The front and back of the arms of the cross are in powder blue enamel. The frame with four eagles is gold plated brass. The Blue Max would have been worn only on a dress uniform. The medal is in very good condition and has a set reserve. This lot has a reserve.
