Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera, ca. 1000 BCE. One of the most endearing and cleverly executed figural vessels we have handled in a while, the base a redware box incised with stylized geometric glyph-like motifs, the upper section featuring a prone figure, with adorable feet hanging over the back, presenting a peaceful countenance with closed eyes, hands folded beneath chin, and a grand coiffure/helmet, all in a bichrome finish of nicely burnished red and natural hues. A special example from the Chorrera. Size: 7" L x 3.25" W x 4.625" H (17.8 cm x 8.3 cm x 11.7 cm)
Provenance: Ex- Private Atlanta, GA collection
