Marian Anderson Signature on First Day Cover. "Marian Anderson (February 27, 1897 - April 8, 1993) was an American contralto and one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century. Famous for her early civil rights position and performance at the Lincoln Memorial after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused permission for her to sing to an integrated audience at Constitution Hall. The Roosevelt\'s helped move the performance to the Lincoln Memorial.
