Africa, Nigeria, early to mid-20th century CE. This is a pair of nice folk art wood figures, a male and a female, both with original, bright pigment remaining. The male figure is largely painted green and holds a box, with his arms tied behind his back with thick cloth; the female figure stands, heavily pregnant and holding her breasts. Both have exaggerated faces with eyes that recall the ancient Nigerian Nok culture. Size of largest: 7" W x 15.9" H (17.8 cm x 40.4 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL acquired before 1975
