7 1/2' Carlson "Four" Trout Rod. Made by master rod-maker, "Sam" Carlson in 1982, this 2/2 quadrate rod is in excellent condition. It has all the trademarks of quality that Sam built into each of his rods: medium flamed cane with golden toned nodes, translucent deep red wraps, blued ferrules, bronze snake guides, and a rarely seen up-locking sliding band reel seat with a walnut spacer ahead of the butt cap. Each section is straight and full length. This wonderful light line rod comes with the original bag and plain aluminum tube.
This lot is one of 11 which showcase the extensive talents of master rod builder Clarence W. "Sam" Carlson. Carlson's inspiration started as just a young boy, while spending after school hours sweeping the floor of the Edward's company shop in Mount Carmel, Connecticut. The time spent in this environment would spark Sam's interest in crafting rods himself. He would become proficient in every aspect of the craft, projecting his knowledge from Edwards into his own style of four sided rods. Having professional training as a machinist, Sam would build every rod as if he were machining a metal object to the finest degree possible, ultimately producing rods of the highest caliber. He was well known as an absolute perfectionist with no tolerance for mistakes. The modern fly fisherman recognizes this commitment as his rods are coveted by dedicated anglers and serious collectors alike. Despite Carlson's accolades among the sporting community, he shunned the lime light, letting the rods themselves speak for the quality of his artistry. Sam Carlson will be remembered as one of the greatest rod makers of the modern era, each of his rods a work of art unto itself, and each an important part of American angling history.
