Lot 0083
[General Lafayette]. Lafayette's calling card and a manuscript eulogy by Alexandre de Boinville. Dated erroneously as May 6, 1834, at the funeral of Lafayette (who died on the 20th of May, 1834.) On two vellum leaves, 11" x 8.5". The first leaf with the calling card of Lafayette laid on at top, verso with sketch of Bonaparte with manuscript caption mounted on paper (which is laid onto the vellum); blank verso of second leaf with some traces of glue (having had, at some time, something laid on.) Second leaf with trimmed left upper margin shaving several letters from the first several lines, both with some moderate soiling/toning. Good. **************************************** Written by de Boinville (Lafayette's aide de camp) as a eulogy following the death of Lafayette. Scribed in French, the eulogy appears translated into English in the November 1834 issue of the Southern Literary Messenger, pp. 93-94, dated simply "May 1834."
