This large sandstone human-effigy Mississippian pipe was recovered in Mason County Illinois. It has a wonderfully stylized human effigy face with weeping eye motif and traditional hairdo with topknot. The pipe measures 7 1/2 long 6 1/4 tall and 3 1/4 inches wide. Pictured in Indian Artifact Magazine March 2002 on page 47 and Lar Hothem Best of the Midwest on page 359. The pipe resided in the Mitchell Museum at Kendall College, Evanston Illinois for many years. Gary Litherland acquired the pipe in 1997 from Patrick Jennings, the curator of the museum. Ray Fraser acquired the pipe from Litherland in January 1998. This is the first time this relic has been offered for sale in 19 years. Greg Perino COA 3-17-1998.
