Pre-Columbian Mayan Territories, El Salvador / Honduras, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A Mayan Copador Swimmer's bowl with rounded walls painted with a pair of elongated swimming figures occupying the lower register and an upper band of glyphs perhaps a representation of the underworld journey, all painted in hues of red and black on a cream ground with red bands framing the registers. The interior is also painted with stylized glyphs, red and black bands, and a central concentric circular motif on the tondo. A nice example with manganese deposits to boot! Size: 7" W x 2.5" H (17.8 cm x 6.4 cm) Provenance: Ex - Private Seattle, WA collection formed between 1940 and 1980

Condition

​Repaired from half a dozen or so pieces, no new clay and repainting over breaks. Nice manganese deposits on areas of surface.
