Dogon Head Rest C. 1900:
A carved head rest with a horse head at either end. The base is carved with geometric patterns and the top is incised with a residue of white paint. The horses heads are detailed in incised patterns with residue of white paint. In African culture, the head rest was designed to preserve very elaborate hairstyles during sleep. The rest would keep the head at the same level as the shoulders. It also is believed to be the recipient of occult forces at night. These head rests were very personal objects and never lent to others
