A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON, ST. BARBARA & ST. KATHERINE, 19TH CENTURY.
The large and substantial double arched wood panel painted with full length images of two female saints in the Abramstevo taste. On the left holding a scroll and chalice and dressed in richly adorned garments is St. Barbara who is identified by the abbreviated Old Russian inscription above her head as THE HOLY GREAT MARTYR BARBARA. And on the right also in richly adorned garments is Katherine who hold a martyrs cross and a spiked wheel, the implement of her martyrdom. She too is identified by the abbreviated inscription above her head as THE HOLY GREAT MARTYR EKATERINA. The size and shape of the panel would suggest that it was once incorporated into an iconostasis, perhaps the local tier. 30.5 inches x 28.75 inches (77.5 x 73 cm).
