A PRE-COLUMBIAN PAINTED TERRCOTTA POTTERY FIGURE AND VESSEL, POSSIBLY NICOYA, COSTA RICA, the painted figural effigy with red and white slip modeled in a kneeling pose with a round body painted with bands around the legs, torso and arms, centered by a circular detail at the chest, the looped arms integral to the figure with painted hands holding the protruding mouth, above black painted molded eyes and a heavy brows, flanked by circular pierced ears below a flat rectangular painted headdress, height: 6", width: 3 1/2", depth: 4"; the low round slip painted vessel with two paw painted feet with looped arms resting on the knees centered by a fearsome painted mask on the bowl with an erupting high relief open mouth, with round nose, black painted eyes under protruding heavy brows, with a small tail over a red stripe, square and black disc painted end to a single small foot, height: 4", diameter: 7 5/8".
Some minor losses to the slip paint on both, the figure with a few mild chips at the crown and top lip, otherwise in very good condition.
