Lot 4280

Details: This lot consists of a bicorne "cocked hat" in a bicorne box. Also included is a sheet of notes attributing the hate to Simeon Smith, Major Minnesota 2nd Infantry regiment.

The hat has a plush black body with black plumes stitched along the top ridge and a black cockade intersected by a gold ribbon and bullion strap. There are bullion decorations in the horns as well. Cockade strap bears a gold pin and button. The pin is in the shape of an eagle facing its left with lined shield, arrows and plant stem in its feet and a banner in its mouth reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The button is rather large, 1" in diameter and nearly .5" high, with an eagle facing its right, lined shield, arrows and plant in its feet, and 22 stars on a lined background. Brown leather sweatband and purple silky lining inside with "SCHUYLER, HARTLEY & GRAHAM" stamped in the top. The box is also labeled "SCHUYLER, HARTLEY & GRAHAM", a well known military goods company in 1860, and dates these items to pre-1880, when the company dropped Schuyler from the name.

Overall measurements of hat are approximately 5" W x 16.75" L x 8" H.

This lot is from the estate of a well-known and well-respected lifetime Civil War collector in Upstate New York. Worth Auctions will feature scores of antique firearms, edged weapons, paintings, and unusual items over the next few months. A selection of post-1898 firearms by major manufacturers will also be featured.

National Book Auctions will also sell the thousands of rare and collectible volumes which cover nearly every notable personage and event of the Civil War including regimental histories.
Condition / Notes: This item is in excellent condition. The feathers are full and intact, the bullion is fairly clean and in good condition, and the leather sweatband and purple silk lining are intact and in good condition. The box has come apart in places but retains its bottom and still protects the hat with a layer of tissue paper inside.
