Laid in is a handwritten note on Ted Koehler's stationery, with original envelope addressed "To Jerry": "April 5th, 1941 - Dear Jerry: - This is to keep both the book and the Decca album. Hope you like it - Sincerely Ted [&] Harold. " Arlen and Koehler together composed many popular songs from the 1920's through the 1940's, including Get Happy, Let's Fall in Love, Stormy Weather, and many others. Throughout the early and mid-1930's they wrote for the Cotton Club, for big band jazz legend Duke Ellington and other top performers. "The Americanegro Suite is in a sense an extension of the Cotton Club songs in that it is a collection of Negro songs, not for a night club, but for the concert stage."
