Lot 0076
A rare form in decorated toleware: an oval teapot dating to the mid 19th century – c. 1840-1860. The teapot is decorated in reds, oranges, green and yellow, and each side includes 3 round fruits, with green and yellow leaves. The top has red leaves on the lift-up lid and yellow swags around the perimeter. The body of the teapot measures 4 ¾” x 3 ½”, it stands 5” tall and measures 10” from handle to spout. The edges of the handle are rolled around wire and the rest of the seams are flat; the spout is soldiered in place.

  • Condition

The teapot is in fine condition or better: there is some minor rubbing of the black undercoat, and some rubbing on the lid, but the decoration on the side is virtually complete. The lid lifts easily and closes securely. There are not splits, holes or rust. Some minor denting on the tip of the spout, and actually that may have been “squeezed” in the form of a “V” to aid in pouring. A very nice example of a rare piece of decorated American toleware.
