Heading:
Author: Hobbes, Thomas
Title: Leviathan, or the Matter, Forme, & Power of a Common-Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civill

Hobbes' influential work of political philosophy, holding that man, unlike the model of a naturally social being postulated by Aristotle, is a purely selfish creature, seeking only his own advantage and resisting the competing claims of others. The result is "confrontation, enmity, and war." Little has occurred in the last 350 years to cause one to dispute his postulate. A few old ink notes to endpapers. Wing H2246. PMM 138. Early ownership markings to front pastedown along with mounted sheet of paper (7¼x6¼") on which are early manuscript remarks relating to Hobbes and Spinosa. Three line quote from Lord Clarendon inked in lower margin of engraved title. Bookplate on verso of engraved title page.

Condition
Some bumping and wear to corners; dampstaining and tidemarks to lower margins sometimes intruding into text, a few small chips to lower edge of engraved title; overall very good.
