Circa 1930s bed covering or "summer" quilt. "ESKIMO LIFE, BARROW ALASKA" "OUTLINING DONE BY RUTH M. KUTRALUH, FLORA AGLU, HESTER TUGLONA, ADA K. MAMEGANS AND BESSIE MAMEGANS". Yellow front with black stitching and black back. Outside edge is stitched with very fine cross stitching. No batting as original. Caucasians largely entered Alaska in the 1890s during the Yukon Territory and Klondike gold rush. This textile was created after the U.S. granted "U.S. Territory" status in 1912 but prior to Alaska's 1959 statehood. Of additional interest, Barrow Alaska (located above the Arctic Circle) is one of the most northern points of both the state of Alaska and the entire U.S. !). An incredible document representing the blending of Eskimo Native American culture and Western World Caucasian culture. Size: 68" x 82"
