Description
JOHN D. HEATWOLE, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE CANNING JAR, salt glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity, unusual squat wide-mouth form with incised medial double rings and a deeply grooved wax-seal rim. Brushed and slip-trailed cobalt Rockingham County conjoined split-head tulip decoration front and back, one side with added dotting to blooms. The pottery of John D. Heatwole (1826-1907), Beldor or Dry River (active 1850-1890), Rockingham Co., VA. 1850-1870. 7 1/2" H, 6 D rim, 5 7/8" D base.
Very good as-found condition with several light hairlines and a chip to edge of base and inner rim, old metal band with copper rivet around base.
Literature: Decoration parallels Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthenware, p. 72, fig. 115.
Provenance: From an eastern Augusta Co, VA estate.
