Oil on canvas depicting a man seated in half-length with his left arm resting atop paper on a table, his right hand holds a pen, and the red drapery behind him reveals the Bridge of Nanking (Nanjing). Unsigned. Stamped "Prepared by Edw. Dechaux, New York" on the reverse canvas. Canvas with old varnish; craquelure and visible stretcher marks; scattered overpainting and flecks of paint loss; two patches on the reverse. Image 28 x 35", in a gilt gesso and wood frame of the period, 36 1/2 x 44" high overall. ESTIMATE $600-800
