19th century Sino-Tibetan thangka depicting Vajrabhairava mandala. Vajrabhairava is the wrathful manifestation of Manjushri (Boddhisattva of Wisdom), translates as 'Diamond Terrifier’ and has conquered all evil spirits, including the Lord of Death, Yama. He is also called "Yamantaka", the Slayer of Death: terminating death is a quality of all buddhas as they have stopped the cycle of rebirth, and thus Yamantaka personifies the goal of the Buddhist practitioner's journey to enlightenment. The mandala represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically with Vajrabhairava in the center and four gates leading to a realm containing ascetics and celestial beings, and with the outer circle depiction various episodes from the life of historical Buddha.
