Lot 0009
This painting is an encaustic on birch panel. Framed in a gold gilt frame it measures 13 3/4" square. The definition of Encaustic is to burn in. The painting is done with pigmented bees wax combined with resin and painted in layers which are fused into each other by means of heat. The source of the heat can come from a torch, hot iron or heat gun. The oldest surviving encaustic panel paintings are the Romano-Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits from the 1st Century BC.
