US Southwest, southern Colorado Plateau (Four Corners region), Ancestral Pueblo/Anasazi, ca. 1030 to 1175 CE. A pretty example of a Wingate Black-on-Red bowl, covered entirely by a polished red slip with black mineral/organic paint forming abstract geometric motifs on the interior. Four large, wave-like swirls dominate the piece, each separated by stepped pyramid forms that project downward from just below the rim and upward from a ring around the center. The center is left without motif, creating a space of peace inside the chaos of the stylized black decoration. Size: 8.1" W x 3.5" H (20.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection
