Lot 0021 Details

Description
Fidel Castro's signature on the menu from the day of his controversial 1995 United Nations speech.

Dated October 22, 1995, this 20 x 22" framed lot features the menu from the event signed by Fidel Castro in pencil at the top, a 4 x 5" photograph of Castro addressing the UN assembly, and a 9 x 10" excerpt of Castro's speech. In the speech, he states,"We lay claim to a world without hegemonism, without nuclear weapons, without interventionism, without racism...without hatred..." His hours long speech was a passionate defense of conditions in Cuba and of the Cuban revolution, and a protest against the American blockade of the country.

Castro was in New York to attend the three-day Millennium Summit of 150 leaders at the United Nations, which was focused on alleviating world poverty. His historic visit was opposed by many who protested Castro's politics. Castro's record-breaking four-hour speech is, to this day, one of the longest UN addresses ever made.

These items provided directly by Mr. Powers' son, expert public speaker on the U-2 Incident and Cold War History, Francis Gary Powers Jr.
