Southeast Asia, Burma (present day Myanmar), ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A large and hefty stone pestle, shaped from a mottled grey-green basalt, with a wide rounded pounding base and a slightly pronounced knobbed handle, and a lengthy shaft. Meant for pounding grains, herbs, medicinal ingredients, and other substances into a fine powder, but could also be used as a weapon in times of dire need. Size: 11" L x 2.625" W (27.9 cm x 6.7 cm).
