Amazon River Valley, Peru, Shipibo, ca. 1950 to 1970. A beautifully decorated polychrome human effigy canteen from the Shipibo-Conibo tribe, an indigenous people along the Ucayali River in the Amazon rainforest in Peru. The neck of the vessel presents a single face with low relief ears and nose and painted eyes, mouth, and coiffure. Adorning the face and compressed round body are mesmerizing, mazelike linear and stylized geometric motifs, perhaps representing tattoos or body paint, all in chocolate brown and russet red on a creamy white ground. A wonderful example from the Shipibo presenting a rather unusual form. Size: 8" L x 6.375" W x 3.75" H (20.3 cm x 16.2 cm x 9.5 cm)
Provenance: private Superior, Colorado, USA collection
