Second oldest Map of India into Malay peninsula. One of the most important Maps and one of the oldest obtainable Maps of contemporary India (previous Maps being based on Ptolemy's ancient views). Based on an Italian diplomat named Cantino's 1502 stolen Portugese sea chart of the area. Then published by Martin Waldseemuller's (the man who named America) in 1513 and then a reduced size and updated version by Lorenz Fries in 1522 published in 1541, being this example. Fries gave full credit to Waldseemuller. Map shows indigenous ruler and customs. One of the first to show Portugese exploration and outposts in India. Remarkable accurate mapping of India and Sri Lanka, while the Malay peninsula is shown too large. Indus and Ganges rivers shown. Title means "new map of two India." Woodblock print.
