Aritst: Ando HiroshigeMount Atago, Shiba, No. 21One Hundred Famous Views of Edo8.875 x 13.375Medium: Japanese Woodblock PrintTwo small closed tears: (1) at right edge of image where shoulder of character’s robe meets the outer frame line; and (2) just to the right of the third short horizontal line from the top in left borderAndo Hiroshige is considered by many to be the last great master of the Ukiyo-e form of art. Here he dramatically interrupts this view from Mount Atago in the district of Shiba southwest of Edo with a figure holding an immense rice paddle. The inscription over the artist's signature to the left identifies the figure as the central actor in the "Heaping Rice Ceremony" performed at the Atago Shrine on the third day of the New Year. In real life, this man was the proprietor of the Atagoya teahouse at the top of Mount Atago. Here however he is dressed in an elaborate costume emblematic of the New Year and of prayers for its bounty. Small piece torn from left margin (piece is included for repair). Print is partially adhered to board from about the horizon line at center to the bottom of the large rice paddlePlease note that this lot has a confidential reserve.
