1596 Jesuit Pontanus Art of Writing Renaissance Humanism Education & Pedagogy
Jacobus Pontanus was a 16th-century Jesuit humanist who devoted himself to teaching ancient linguistics and rhetoric. He is most remembered for his work ‘Progymnasmata Latinitatis’ which was a work containing the rules and precepts of the art of writing. Pontanus focused heavily on a classical approach to writing and used elements of ancient languages.
This 1596 edition includes notes of Adriano Castellesi. Castellesi’s notes expound on Pontanus’s rules of writing, but the most extensive are his notes on writing and review Christian Catechisms and Catholic doctrine.
