Straight diamond section blade with 3/4 of each side of the blade displaying etched panels on a gilt background. The right side features an eagle perched on a cannon, and scrolls surrounding "Presented/to Captain/Geo. M. Lodgdon/from the Richardson/Rifles, Jan. 16th 1893". The other side shows a suit of armor, a cannon, and other arms motifs, as well as a large "U.S.", and marked "AMES/SWORD/-CO-/CHICAGO/-ILL-". Cast gilt brass and chased hilt, guard features a relief eagle surrounded by flags and foliage. The folding counterguard displays a myriad of crossed arms. The top of the quillon has the relief face of a bearded man. Pommel features an eagle on one side and a shield on the other, cast silver grip with chased designs and wrapped with decorated gilt brass. Complete with nickel-plated steel scabbard, with ornate pierced gilt brass mounts featuring arms motifs and a patriot eagle on throat mount. Excellent condition. Blade retains a light grey patina with some darker areas and generous traces of gilt finish in some areas. Hilt retains about 60-70% gilt finish, otherwise brass is unpolished, and grip is excellent. Scabbard retains almost all original nickel finish, and mounts retain generous traces of gilt, especially in protected areas. This is a very high-grade Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's sword, rarely found this ornate, displaying three patriotic eagles on the front side, and with a nice presentation on the blade.Blade Length: 31"Overall Length: 37 - 3/8"Paperwork: No
