A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles H. Valentine, Co. A, 124th New York (Orange Blossoms) Vols., [WIA Gettysburg, Pa., 7/03/63], "Wagoner's Camp", Nov. 4, 1863, in part: "…I suppose you want to know how I am getting along. My leg has not healed any yet but I go around on crutches some & I fell that I am getting better everyday. caught a cold the first tine I went out doors…that is the reason…why the scar does not heal. I don't know what to do for the surgeons all they say…is to put on sticking [?] I don't know but that is all that is wanted…the bone has got to heal before the flesh will. I don't see any thing can be done but to let the leg alone and wimp will be the cure…I wish I had followed your advise last spring when I was at home. I should not have been here now, but I suppose it is all for the best. I must be contented to stay…Charles H. V…". VG
